When it comes to heart surgery, more deaths occur outside of the operating room than during surgery. Dr. Daniel Engelman, a cardiac specialist at Baystate Medical Center, is among a small group of medical professionals who believed that a system could be developed to change that. Working with a team, Dr. Engelman helped create a new standard procedure for post-op cardiac patient care: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. Last month, the ERAS cardiac treatment protocol was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and the treatment plan has gone viral. Dr. Engleman joined Carrie Saldo in-studio to share more about the plan and how it works to prevent post-op complications.
